In XP it is called the Notification Area. :o)

Seems as though you are needing a bit more space.

Per Google:
xp notification area - approx 360,000 hits
xp system tray - approx 1,920,000 hits

It appears not to "notify" as much as it contains items related to the "system". ;-)

Even MS isn't afraid to use it:

Some history as to the reason

Taskbar->Tray? I've never had anyone confuse the two. If MS uses the term (referring to XP), and the program to display that area is called systray.exe, I have no problem calling it the System Tray. It exists in XP also, not only in Win95 as stated.

XP? They mention Longhorn. ;-)

No, look at the link I gave to the ms kb.

The link you gave stated that systray.exe was in Win95 without acknowledging its existence in newer versions.

No the point was that the "official name" is from the core group that created it, and it is misnamed very frequently(even in MS groups)

Then maybe that "core group" should have named the executable "ntray.exe" instead. THEY'RE the ones who screwed up! ;-)

Terry R.

Or Nottray.exe in keeping with the 8.3 naming scheme? ;-)

ha! I typed that first and thought I'd get grief for NOT TRAY!
