RE: lsass.exe error and shutdown

I have a laptop, running Windows XP, SP2 (it might be SP3, but I'm at work
and don't have it with me to look at).

I was working on the computer last night and it just shut down on its own.
I tried rebooting and it went past the Windows XP screen, then to the Compaq
screen, then an error message popped up stating a lsass.exe error (something
about volume and mounted or unmounted), then it shut down. I tried rebooting
and received the same results, except for the lsass.exe error referred to the
requested operation could not be started. I tried rebooting three more
times, using last known good configuration and safe mode twice, but it would
still shut down (I didn't see the error dialog box these times). Then I
rebooted it again and it worked fine this time. I immediately performed a
Backup to my external hard drive and was lucky that the computer stayed on
overnight, for over 8 hours. This morning I verified that the Backup was
successful and about 15 minutes later the computer just shut down while I was
in the other room.

I am running AVG free (8.0) and it is set to auto-update. I know it's
updated because the computer was off for a day and when I started it up, I
saw that the AVG needed to be updated, so I manually performed the update.

Any suggestions? I have read some of the posts, but they refer to receiving
a "shutdown message" and to abort the shutdown, but I have never had that
happen - it just shuts down on its own, without warning.

Thanks so much - this site is awesome and I've hooked numerous co-workers on
it. Sorry for the long wording, I just wanted to ensure all information was
provided as to the steps I've taken so far.

You need to post back with the exact stop error message; there are literally
hundreds of lsasse.exe errors in the knowledge base.
