"The Windows Firewall and Security Center should be set to Automatic"
Thx Gerry, I changed this one from Disabled to Automatic and this Service
changed immediately to Started. I think, but will know for sure later, that
this is shown to me by Spybot S&D each time I scan. I presumed it was
because I had WXP Firewall turned Off due to having the Norton Firewall
activated. I didn't think, not unusual, of it being an entry under Services.
I have two more on Manual that shows they have Started ... I have an
External HD & Laptop Wireless Connection to my Desktop - one User.
11. Removable Storage - Mine Started Manual
12. Logical Disk Mgr Administrative Services - Mine Started Manual
I have the following Services Disabled - I checked them over and they still
appear to me to bear the accurate "Disabled" Setting. If you would be so
kind as to indicate any suggested change next to these entries I'd sure
appreciate it and it would save me hours checking those Sites as well as a
tremendous help to many Readers.
Yes I know I'm taking advantage but ... Please! LOL My eyes are tearing
from going through these Services.
1. Alerter
2. Clipboard
3. Error Reporting Service
4. Messenger
5. Net.TCP Port Sharing Service
6. Network DDE
7. Network DDE DSDM
8. Portable Media Serial Number Service
9. QBCF Monitor Service
10. Routing - Remote Access Telnet
11. Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service.
As to Anti Spyware. I've always had it in a paid AntiVirus program ie Norton.
I have been using Lavasoft Ad-Aware Plus which I liked until they issued the
new Anniversary version - I was having problems with it so uninstalled with
the intention of reinstalling the previous version. One of the Posters here
had problems and thought it was their uninstalled/installed procedure in
their program so I'll try installing it again. This time it won't be
necessary to uninstall Ad-Aware.
I discovered several entries of Call Backs in the Housecall Micro Trend free
Scan log of 25Jan09 I saved. It says there's 279 "ProcessSystemCallback"
Found Threat infection: Adware_MemWatcher. Note Adware not Ad-Aware.
Maybe this isn't Ad-Aware except that I've never had such entries before
installing Ad-Aware's new version. Too bad I'm unable to send this log to
u.
Besides Ad-Aware Plus I have Spybot S&D and Spyware Blaster. I had Spyware
Dr until a week ago and I'm not renewing my Subscription.
Spyware Dr continually left 18.2 MB of garbage files in it's avcb\temp
folder each day including Adobe Acrobat Reader 5 (I have Adobe Flash Player
10 & Adobe Reader 9 ) and it would clear them out during the night. I
contacted Tech Support but was told their program wouldn't do that. I
offered to send JPGs on two occasions when I asked for a solution but they
weren't the least bit interested.
I still have numerous JPGs if anyone is interested. Better still if u have
Spyware Dr go to the Secunia Site and run their Scan to see if u have these
files. Surely I couldn't be the only one that had them installed. It
happened every day from late Oct to end of Dec08.
My Gosh - I better quit or I'll end up publishing this book. ... Thx again
Gerry.

Al 9 services listed should be set to Manual.
The Windows Firewall and Security Center should be set to Automatic.
Dumping Norton Internet Security will help system performance. What
anti-spyware programme do you have installed? AVG 8.00 (Free ) only has
an anti-virus capability. You can obtain paid AVG versions to incude an
anti-spyware capability but there are freeware options from other
software houses also avalable. The Windows Firewall in conjuction AVG 8
(Free) works fine here.

Hope this helps.

Services - Manual Settings
WXP Pro SP3, 3.60 GHz, 2 GB RAM Single User Desktop DSL with Wireless
Connection to laptop. 2 HDs and Toshiba 250 External Drive
I Have the Following Startup Type Settings on "Manual" but .
I've found their Status Changes Immediately on Reboot/Shutdown to
Status: Started.
1. Application Layer Gateway
2. COM + Event System
3. HTTP SSL
4. Network Connections
5. Network Location Awareness
6. Remote Access Connection Mgr
7. SSDP Discovery Service
8. Telephony
9. Terminal Services
My Question is: As these particular Manual settings change to
Started, Should I change these "Manual" Settings to Automatic?
One I just noticed on "Disabled" that I now question what must have
been my decision:
10. Security Centre . I have it Disabled - it "Monitors System
Security Settings and Configuration".
Hmmm would this have been converted to "Disabled" because I HAD the
WXP Firewall Disabled as I was using Norton Internet Security 2008 as
my Firewall??
As of a few hours ago, I now have the free version 8.0 of AVG which
doesn't appear to have a Firewall.
I just reactivate the WXP Pro SP3 Firewall and Shutdown but . this
setting is still on Disabled. I'm now presuming it's ME that has
to change this to Automatic???
These setting are so confusing to a Novice. Well, just a stupid one I
guess.
Thx for any suggestions.
