Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

I got a reconditioned laptop that has got XP installed on it even

Could I downgrade to 98? Could I install Ubuntu? Would this speed
it up?

Sorry, I cant find them. All I know that it is a Toshiba S2800-100.
Apparently it is rare. Not even on a toshiba site.

What do you mean you cannot find them? You bought this computer, right?

You said "... has got XP installed on it even though it has not got the
right specs ..." so what did you mean by saying it did not have the "right
specs" if you did not know the specs? ;-)

If you have Windows XP installed and working - you can see what processr you
have, how much memory you have, how much hard disk space you have (and have
free), etc.

A few ways, really.

1) Belarc Advisor. Download it (free), install it, run it and it will tell
you all sorts of useful information - inclusing rhe processor, memory and
hard disk drive space...

2) Start --> Control Panel --> System --> General tab (Under the heading
"Computer")
or
Right-click on the "My Computer" icon and choosse "Properties" -->
General tab (Under the heading "Computer")

3) Start --> Run --> msinfo32 --> click OK.
System Summary for OS and Version, Processor, Total Physical Memory;
Components --> Storage --> Drives for the hard drive information.

A quick Google search for what you gave:
http://www.google.com/search?q=Toshiba+S2800-100

Gave some idea of what it *could* be...
"cel650 + 64 ram + 6 hdd + dvd"

And an idea to search for Toshiba Satellite S2800-100:
http://www.google.com/search?q=Toshiba+Satellite+S2800-100

And looking around -most seem to mention "Celeron" (a negative in my book -
but not everyones), the RAM varies, the HDD is small - few seem to mention
it beyond Windows 2000...

Overall - I would say that computer is not worth much effort. It would
likely run Windows 98 okay, Ubuntu okay, etc. All depends on the amount of
memory you have and what you plan on doing with it.

When older laptops like that can be had with 30+ day warranty and likely
much more power/memory...

For well under $500 U.S. dollars...

It's just hard to fathom trying to use that particular older laptop for much
more than to tinker with *nix with... Or maybe Windows 9x.
