Hi Neil,
It is pretty straight forward:
To correct:
1. Go to Start/Run and type in: control userpasswords2 and press ok.
2. On the Users tab, left click "your user name" then clear the Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer check box and then click OK.
3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the "user name and password" for the account you want to be logged on each time you start your computer.
Added note: (Alex MVP)
If you want to logon to one of the other users, hold down shift as the system boots up.
Tip:
Add Control UserPasswords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)

There's been many posts on this subject with basically the same
remedy. I've done the following but the
to begin click on user name
keeps coming up.
I select the user name / account name (whatever) I set up when I
installed Windows -- it had Administrator and I made ours Neil and
Carol -- in trying the directions below, the user name I select is
Neil and Carol Administrator.
Your help appreciated.
Here's what I tried --
none of these worked 01/2008
from user group
Click Start, Run and type CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2, and click Ok.
Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer" option, and click Ok. Once you uncheck the option "Users
must enter a user name" and click OK/Apply, Administrator account name
will be displayed in the text box. Type-in a different user name and
password in order to auto-login to that account.
NOTE: In Windows XP Home Edition, don't try to auto-login as
Administrator, as it does not allow logging in as Administrator from
Normal mode. http://windowsxp.mvps.org/autologon.htm

from microsoft
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type control userpasswords2, and then click OK.
Note When users try to display help information in the User Accounts
window in Windows XP Home Edition, the help information is not
displayed. Additionally, users receive the following error message:
Cannot find the Drive:\Windows\System32\users.hlp Help file. Check to
see that the file exists on your hard disk drive. If it does not
exist, you must reinstall it.
Clear the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer" check box, and then click Apply.
In the Automatically Log On window, type the password in the Password
box, and then retype the password in the Confirm Password box.
Click OK to close the Automatically Log On window, and then click OK
to close the User Accounts window.
