I think I read the other the other day that in standby you use more
power than switching off and leaving the plug in the power socket.
Whatever not rebooting means that if any programmes have a memory leak
they do not release memory even if closed until the computer is
restarted.
If you Shut down and then Start the computer how long does it take to
complete loading the Desktop icons?
Were there any files left in the Most Fragmented List after you ran Disk
Defragmenter?
After major changes of software cleaning up and defragmenting is
essential.
I would download and run cCleaner as I suggested.
When you Windows XP from what source did install third party drivers?
Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?
Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System
Information. Open Components under System Summary and click on Problem
Devices. Is anything listed there?
What is the Current Transfer Mode for your hard drives?

Reinstalling Windows XP could be a total waste of your time.

I've always manually put my computers in Standby overnight, assuming
(perhaps erroneously) Standby would reduce power consumption. I
have two self assembled desktops, virtually identical, and one laptop
on my network.
Power management settings are default for windows xp. The computers
are always on unless manually put in standby mode.
I normally run defrag every couple of months. I had not run defrag
on the problem system yet because I had just reformatted and
reinstalled windows xp pro and office xp pro. I ran a defrag after
your last message, but it did not correct the problem.
Windows Search is 4.0, the latest version according to windows update.
Search is fully indexed and does not perform a full scan after coming
out of standby mode.
When I reinstalled after formatting, I started with windows xp pro
and then all service packs and updates. Then i did the same with
office xp pro. All software is up to date.
I have not run any disk cleanup utilities yet because I am starting
with a clean slate so to speak.
Other anomalies that I noticed are: I can open and retrieve emails in
outlook. I can also open and close word or excel. However, I can not
retrieve a file or save a new file. The system immediately hangs. I
also cannot open internet explorer or firefox - the system
immediately hangs. I can open control panel, but not any of the
programs within control panel.
I am tempted to reformat and start all over again, but that is a very
time consuming process. Let me know if you have other thoughts.
Again, thanks for your help.

Why do you use Standby rather than turn off the computer overnight?
What is the computer make and model? Is the computer a desktop or a
laptop?
Start, Control Panel, Power Options. What Power Scheme has been
selected? What is the Standby Setting with regard to the hard drive?
McShield.exe and McProxy.exe relate to McAfee. SearchIndexer.exe
relates to Windows Desktop Search. Hpqgalry.exe is an HP Scanner.
McAfee uses a lot of resources and creates performance issues on
computers on a Windows XP computer with 512 mb RAM or less. Your
computer has a lot more so it should not be a problem. The only
thought I have is whether it starts a full scan when the computer
comes out of Standby. Does it?
Windows Desktop Search is capable of creating problems. What version
is installed?
How often do you run Disk CleanUp? How often do you run Disk
Defragmenter?
An alternative to Disk CleanUp is cCleaner (freeware) which does a
more thorough job than Disk CleanUp. Disk CleanUp has to be run for
each user profile, whereas cCleaner only needs to be run once.
http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp
http://www.ccleaner.com/
With any cleaner you need to proceed with caution. To be safe you
should create a restore point before using cCleaner. cCleaner also
offers backup before removal.
When using cCleaner think twice before checking Autocomplete Form
History under Internet Explorer. You do get a warning but this one
has irritating consequences. You may need to restore your system's
recollection of passwords after use so keep a record off computer so
that they can easily be re-entered.
Leave the Scan for Issues option alone.
cCleaner does not remove restore points. You need to use Disk CleanUp
for this. Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk
CleanUp, More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest
System Restore point.

I normally leave the computers on 24/7, putting them in standby
mode each night and then awakening them in the morning. I copied
the highest peak and virtual memory programs both in the hangup
condition (after awakening from standby) and in the normal
condition (after a clean restart). I was not able to access the
disk defrag report in the hangup condition, but was able to copy
the report in the normal condition. Perhaps you can make sense of
it. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager.
With the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check
the boxes before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What
are the figures for the 6 processes using the largest amounts?
Figures after resuming from standby would seem appropriate.
Do you leave your computer on 24/7?
I would be interested in seeing a Disk Defragmenter report . Open
Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My
Documents Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk
Defragmenter as it is more informative.

I am certain you are correct but I haven't been able to figure it
out. The CPU is an AMD Athlon 64 2.2 ghz on an AMD A8N-SLI Deluxe
motherboard with 2GB of ram. I use McAfee Security Center and
scan every couple of days with LavaSoft Ad-aware. Total commit
charge is 418236k, limit is 4034512k and peak is 640576k - during
the hangups. These hangups occur only after the system is
awakened from standby mode. They never occur after a fresh boot
or a restart. Prior to the reformat and reinstall, the system
functioned smoothly in all conditions. The bios and all device
drivers are current. Windows XP Pro and Office XP Pro are also
fully updated. Interestingly, I have a second machine set up
identically and it functions normally as well. I have done many
new installations, reformats and reinstalls over the years and
never run into this type of problem. I am truly perplexed.

Your reports are symptoms and most likely not the cause.
What are your anti-virus and anti-soyware arrangements?
What is the CPU and how much RAM does your computer have? Right
click on the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select
Properties to get this information.
Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the
Performance Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit
and the Peak?
