Thanks for the commands Kelly. I uninstalled the last few things, but still
no luck.. I will try to reinstall that pesky microsoft update that I believe
cause this.
Hopefully I will be back in business before 2009 LOL!
Thanks again for your help

Hi Kelly,
Thanks for the quick reply!
The error I get when I try to run explorer.exe is:
Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe'.....
This is weird because I actually used "browse" to find the file and then
selected it.
Also, I tried the line you mentioned below, and got the following error:
Windows cannot acess the specified device, path or file. You may not have
appropriate permissions to access them.
I am logged on with an administrator account that should have all
permissions.
Is there a way I can get my control panel? I would like to try to remove
the
last few items I installed.

Hi Sean,
What is the error message when you run explorer.exe?
In the meantime, go to Start/Run and type in CMD:
expand x:\i386\explorer.ex_ c:\windows\explorer.exe

Hi,
I have the same problem, but I can access my task manager.
Unfortunately
I
get an error when I try to run explorer.exe. This issue started right
after
I installed:
Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB960714)
If I could get to my control panel somehow, I would remove the update
and
try reinstalling it...but I do not have the shortcut in MyComputer.
Can
anyone let me know how to access the control panel from the task
manager?
Also if anyone could shed some light on this issue overall, it would be
greatly appreciated. I dug around and mainly found posts dated back to
2004.
I am hoping for something more relevant and to see if anyone else has
experienced this issue after installing the update listed above.

Ron,
Last Known... gives me the same results. As I said in my note,
Ctrl+Alt+Delete does nothing, Ctrl+Shift+Esc does nothing,
Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Anything does nothing. I'm having the customer bring
their
installation CD by. Thanks for the "good ol' college try"...

Have you tried starting using the last known good configuration
setting?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307852 Can you press the
ctrl-alt-del
keys
and bring up the task manager? If so, on the applications tab,
click
the
New Task button and on the resulting screen, enter: explorer.exe to
see
if you can bring up the desktop. If all else fails, you may be able
to
use your system CD to do a repair installation.

...and Ctrl+Alt+Delete and Ctrl+Shift+Esc do nothing. I've also
tried
restarting in to Safe Mode. All I get is a blank screen with Safe
Mode
in the corners. There is no way to run any program. Safe Mode
with
Command prompt does the same thing.
Anyone have any idea how to restore the desktop when running any
program
is disabled??? Thanks in advance!!!
Robert
