Re: Windows XP boots to background only, no start button, no icons

Hi Alex,

I tried the cacls command for explorer.exe and it showed that users & power
users have Read only, but administrator has full. I logged in with the admin
account in safe mode, but it still did not let me access the file.

I also tried my original XP cd and the line of code Kelly provided, even
when I changed the x: for the letter of my drive, it gave me the same error
about not having the right permissions.

I am hoping I will not have to redo my whole system again, since I just
redid the whole thing a couple of weeks ago. Any further info that could
help would be greatly appreciated.

I may be wrong but I suspect the "x:" part of the path that Kelly posted
refers to your CD drive, i.e. you need to have an original XP CD/DVD in the
drive at the time.

If explorer.exe is visible to you in dir listings but Windows is complaining
that it's missing, it's possible that it's either corrupt or that the
permissions on it have been altered to prevent anyone from executing/reading
it. Can you use the command line "cacls" tool to examine its permissions?

If I could get to my control panel somehow, I would remove the update

try reinstalling it...but I do not have the shortcut in MyComputer.

greatly appreciated. I dug around and mainly found posts dated back to
2004.
I am hoping for something more relevant and to see if anyone else has
experienced this issue after installing the update listed above.
