Where is the rest of this thread?
What is wrong with the Task Manager?
What have you tried?
In the meantime:

Hi Roy,
Nothing difficult for obtaining that Service Pack 2, I pointing to.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=049c9dbe-3b8...
Ignore this: DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE
COMPUTER:
Download the Service Pack 2 and save it in your Briefcase Folder. To
save the XP Service Pack 2, to install at a later time, if necessary, burn
it to a CD-R disk using Nero or a like program.
After the download is complete, go to Start then Run and type in
msconfig. Click OK.
Click Services Tab. Check Hide All Microsoft Services. Click Disable
All. Click Startup Tab. Click Disable All. Click Apply. Click OK. Click OK
through all errors, if McAfee is installed. Click Restart.
On restart or reboot, go back to msconfig and dot Normal Startup. Click
Apply. Click OK through all errors. Click Exit without Restart.
Open Briefcase Folder. Find the download and highlight it. Click it and
follow onscreen instructions for installing the Windows XP Service Pack 2
Upgrade.
Do not install Windows XP Service Pack 3, before installing all the .Net
Frameworks versions including .Net Framework 3.0 because it will not install
at all if attempting to install after installing Windows XP Service Pack 3.
Better to install Windows XP Service Pack 3 after installing all .Net
Framework versions, for peace of mind and my experiences with it.
Click Finish when done and reboot.

Thanks for your reply
But the nagging question still remains, will the installation of this
service pack 2 solve the problem about the recovery of the
functionality of the task manager?
Is there a quick fix for this problem ?
