I have XP Home Edition and have been trying to install the Service Pack 3
(KB936929). I have followed each of the directions from this site:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377 and keep getting the same error
"Access denied." When I try to run the script (which I was sure to label
correctly .cmd), it runs for a few minutes and then I get a bright blue
sceen
saying "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to
prevent
damage to your computer."

What do I need to do to get this update installed?
Your problem is caused by improperly set permissions on the keys that SP3
needs to change.
You need to fix the reason for the error message whether you install the
update or not.
If you look through the installation log file, you may find more information
about the error.
What is the status of malware detection? Malware could easily change the
permissions.
