When I go to Add/Remove Programs, I see numerous Java files, such as
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
and
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_04
and
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 4
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Java(TM) 6 Update 11
and
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
All but one of these is over 100 MB. Can I remove most of these?

Remove them ALL.
Reboot.
Download the latest Offline Installer for Java SE Runtime
Environment (JRE) (right now - 6 Update 11) and use it to install
the latest version.
Reboot for good measure.
Next time you are offered an Update for your Java - don't accept.
Simply download the latest Offline Installer and remove the old
version and install the new bversion - keeping things nice and neat.
Java's version of 'updating' leaves a lot to be desired.

Things have changed a bit.
Since version 11, Java uninstalls previous versions.
Otherwise use JavaRa 1.12 to remove previous versions.

"Since version 11"? I assume you mean Java Runtime Environment
(JRE) 6 Update 11?
Since - as far as consumers are concerned - "Java Runtime
Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11" *is* the latest version (and it did
not uninstall previous versions during its update when I chose to
try it that way hoping they had finally fixed it); I would venture
to say you are speaking of a pre-release or from the future? heh
Yes - SUN does have an "Early Access" section:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/ea.jsp
But I cannot say I recommend anyone - much less the common consumer
- to try out *any* beta products - much less anything with 'java'
in its name. ;-)

It uninstalled version 6 Update 10 when I did a manual update on 2
machines that I use (XP & Vista) & on my folks XP box.
Interesting.
- However - how many versions did you have installed?
- In what way did you install it (online? offline?)
Makes me want to do more testing, for sure. It would be nice if it finally did
update correctly (online and offline - considering I don't plan on giving all the
users I manage adminitsrative rights to update their software...)

How To Ask Questions The Smart Way
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
I only had the latest version at the time(6 Update 10)& had been removing the
previous versions *after* updating to the latest.
PA Bear had sent this link last month, that told of this & I found that it was going
to occur,as of 6 Update 10,with the latest:
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2008/10/java_update_promises_to_remove.html
I usually go to Majorgeeks & get the update as they seem to come out with them before
anybody else-even before the vendors site does, sometimes.
I just ran the installer from the site.
