No not the stock market! but a friend is having a problem with a new
Verbatim USB 250 GB drive
http://www.verbatim.com.au/en_AU/products/hard-drives/2-5-hard-drives/47562/2-5-portable-hard-drive-usb-250gb
formatted as NTFS. Operating system XP professional with SP2 installed
with a wired network.
There are several shared folders without any restrictions on the drive
containing video files etc. They are accessible when he turns on his
Beyonwiz PVR P1 . http://www.beyonwiz.com.au/DP_P1_overview.asp ie he
can play files over the network.
The problem arises if he safely removes the USB drive from the computer,
turns off the computer; the next day when he turns on the computer and
then plugs in the drive the shares have been lost, so he has to
re-establish them.
If he leaves the USB drive connected to the computer and then turns on,
the shares remain. It seems Windows XP is forgetting the shares or a
hidden file? is not being written to the drive?
I have an almost identical set up and have no problems - I regularly
remove my home assembled USB drive, cart it around town, plug it back in
and all of my shared folders are still there and available to my Beyonwiz
PVR P1.
His network settings and router are the same as mine.. any thoughts?
Shares details are kept here:
hklm/system/currentcontrolset/services/lanmanserver/shares. I would keep
an eye on this key. I would also check the Event Viewer.
Many many thanks for this info - this seems to be the first answer I have
received that makes sense. The next step when i get the chance to drive down
to my friends place (well out of town) is to find out why presumably his
computer is not saving his shares? An example of mine that works without any
issues listed below.
