I wanted to run a scan and repair of my system files.
When I run sfc /scannow with my XP Pro Version 2002....
...which includes service pack 2.....
I get a messge requesting Service Pack 2 disc.....the message dialog
explains that certain DLL files are required for XP to operate
properly.
Question 1
If the disc includes service pack 2 ....why would it request SP 2?
Usually that means it doesn't realize the SP2 is on the CD. Use the
browse or whatever the function is named and point to the CD, and then
point to the SP2 folder. That should satisfy it.
I've been thru that on a couple of machines; pointing to it always
worked.
Question 2
Any other suggestion would be appreciated regarding whatever I may be
overlooking.
Hard to tell.
SP3 is very worthwhile in your case, IF you know your machine can
tolerate it; e.g. it's been installed before and worked OK.
IF it's never had SP3 installed, take it up to SP2 and do a Full
Backup to your external drive, DVD, wherever you keep them. That way, if
SP3 acts up, you can always go back to SP2 status with a simple Restore
and come back to it later. It's well worthwhile reading the MS pages
about installing SP3; lots of good info there about what to do first.
By going to SP3 you will save having the machine having to do what is
now over a hundred updates, which takes quite awhile. It makes
rebuilding a lot faster. Also, SP2's firewall gives you a firewall to
use for connecting to the 'net so it's another level of protection on
top of your antivirus program.
Let us know how it goes, OK?
Twayne
Thanks in advance.
