I plan to buy a new larger monitor to replace the 12 inch one on my Dell PC
with Windows XP (3SP) on it.
The monitor is is a 20 inch Dell (1680x1050).
Is it simply a matter of just plugging it in or is it a matter of installing
new driver, etc.
Would appreciate any help

More and more newer LCD monitor no longer have drivers. They expect
your video card to be able to be set to the LCD's recommended
resolution. You should update the video cards to the latest
available.
BTW: A 12 inch monitor is highly not possible. VGA monitors started
at 14 inch (13 inch viewable.)
FWIW, monitors don't have drivers, but .inf files. (they provide a
setting listing for the video adapter to use)
