Re: USB Not working

Thanks Kelly, assuming I understand what you are trying to tell me I did
make some changes to the registry (see below). Also I have SP3 installed on
my WinXP Pro system.

Ref line 400 - I did NOT have the entry for
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR\Enum]
"0"="USB\\Vid_116f&Pid_0005\\20031015193616796"
"Count"=dword:00000001
"NextInstance"=dword:00000001
Under USBSTOR in the left-nav pane I added "Enum" in the right-pane for Enum
I added"0"="USB\\Vid_116f&Pid_0005\\20031015193616796"
"Count"=dword:00000001
"NextInstance"=dword:00000001

I was confused by the "0"="USB\\Vid_116f&Pid_0005\\20031015193616796" entry
but I think I got it right (but I'm not sure). I have four entries in the
right-pane
(1) (Default), type is REG_SZ, Data is (value not set)
(2) 0, type is REG_SZ, Data is "USB\\Vid_116f&Pid_0005\\20031015193616796"
(I did NOT add the quite marks)
(3) Count, type is REG_DWORD, Data is 0x00000001 (1)
(4) NextInstance, type is REG_DWORD, Data is 0x00000001 (1)

Ref line 338, everything was there but I did make one change for the
ImagePath, the first hex pair was 53, 00 and I changed it to 73, 00

I have a one USB item working (it has since I rebuilt the system), my mouse
(Microsoft)

As a test
(1) I plugged in a thumb-drive (I use the USB port on the MB and on one of
my adapter cards) and the system saw it and I could use it
(2) I plugged in an external USB drive that I've used for years, it was
previously attached to this system. It works if I plug it into the MB USB
port, it works in one of my adapter cards but not the other.
(3) I plugged in a second external USB drive (same make as the above) and it
worked in the MB port and the card that the above worked in. The second card
failed to see the unit.
(3) I plugged in a third external USB drive (Seagate 400GB) with the same
results as above
(4) I plugged in a 4th external USB drive (Kingwin). I hear the system
respond but I never see the drive. The one card that has not seen the other
drives does not see this drive either. Is it safe to assume that I need a
specific driver for this unit? Per the Kingwin site I should not need any
thing special.
(5) I plugged in a 5th external USB drive (Eaglebit with a Kingwin tray) -
this did not work in any port. I then plugged it into my laptop and again it
did not work. At this time I assume that either the Eaglebit enclosure or
the Kingwin tray is defective.

At this point I feel that I've made some very good progress (with your help
of course) and think that my second USB adapter card is either defective or
I need some specific drivers and my one external enclosure is sick.

Hi all,

In addition: I have found as of late this gets cleared up after
installing SP2. Either way, see if lines 338 and 400 helps:

Recently I was forced to rebuild my WinXP Pro system and shortly after
that most of my USB ports failed to work. I have a MSI Mother Board P6N
SLI Platinum, I'm using the built-in RAID 5 for a three drive 1.8TB and a
3ware RAID5 for another 1.8TB. The boot drive is a 250GB IDE, on the
forth channel of the built-in SATA controller I have a 1TB work drive. As
a test I have another 250GB IDE drive on second IDE controller with my
CD/DVD drive. All of the internal drives seem to work OK. The MB has two
front USB ports and four back ports, I've added two-five port USB adapter
cards. Before the rebuild for the most part all of the USB ports worked,
since the rebuild 99% of the time when I plug a USB device (external HD
or thumb drive) I don't see the device and when I look in the device
manager there are no errors. If I plug the device into another computer I
can use it. Any suggestions to get the USB ports working?
