Thanks for both your replies:
You now have two choices:
- Log on as a domain administrator, using the domain administrator's
password, or
I cannot log in as domain admin. The domain is connected to via VPN.
When I reboot or log out, the VPN connection is lost. So, when i am
logging in,
I cannot connect to the domain because the VPN connection is down.
- Specify a local logon in the logon frame and use the old Admin account and
password.
I tried using the old Admin account and password for the local machine
but it isn't
letting me in :(
If you only see two fill-in areas at the log in box (User, Password),
click the (is it More Options?) button. Then you'll see the 3rd entry,
which should have your domain and the local computer listed. Click the
Local Computer and then log in with your local Admin account.
Yes, I am aware of that thanks. The local Admin account is no longer
working.
I wonder how I remove domain login and go back to local machine
without admin rights?
Can't be done?
Thanks again.
Not working or maybe you forgot the password? By default, there is no
password.

There is a way to reset the Administrator password in Windows. Do a
Google search for it. I've used two different methods a couple times
with success.

No, I didn't forget it. That is why I feel that this could be resolved
some other way.
I have been booting up XP before switching to "domain" and seeing two
login choices:

1) Administrator
2) "Peter" - my local user account

Are you at the Welcome Screen here? You should have a login dialog box. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del twice.

I have always been able to successfully log in to both.
When I switched to "domain" the Administrator account does not work.
The local user does.
I have tried to fix this doing a "repair" using my install CD but the
repair asks for the admin
credentials. Any link to the "windows" way of resolving this?
Otherwise, I will do as Malke
suggested.

Thanks.

When you try to log in to the domain, the local Administrator account won't be used. The Administrator login will need the Administrator password for the domain in order to work.

If you haven't actually connected to the domain at least once before with the domain Administrator account and you're not connected right now, the domain Administrator won't be able to authenticate, so it will fail.
