This morning I tried to archive a couple of shortcuts to a .zip file using two different programs. This only succeeded in crashing Windows Explorer, and it does this every time I try it. Has anybody else experienced this problem?

TIA
By the way, of course I'm using XP since this is an XP newsgroup. XP Home SP3.
Anybody????

Hi John,

Which two programs? I have Winzip and 7zip and it works fine.

Thanks for replying, Terry. I used Winrar 3.51 and IZArc 3.81.

Are you selecting the shortcuts and then right-clicking and selecting SentTo?

No, I'm using the context menu entries that IZArc and Winrar installed:

Add to Archive File...

and:

Add to archive...

I don't have an answer why it's happening to you, but did you try this? Create the zip file first, then drag and drop the shortcuts onto the zip file. Most of the time that can easily be done by right-clicking inside the folder and selecting New, and the zip program you use (unless you have removed it using TweakUI in the Templates section).

Yes, that worked. Thanks for suggesting it. However, what I did was to copy and paste a zip file, rename it and delete the contents first. Then I dragged the shortcuts into it. Don't have the "Send to" entries or the New templates. Deleted the templates somehow, I forget now how I did it. Probably can get them back by reinstalling the programs.

I wonder what was going on? I have disabled XP's built in .zip file handling by using this program:

Never had any problems because of doing this before, that is, if it's really the cause of the problem.

I guess to test it, you could re-enable XP's zip folder. At least you have a workaround for now.

Take care John,
