Once your PC is infected with a computer virus or worm, your
computer becomes compromised and nothing less than a reinstallation
of the operating system is going to work. Yes, you can try
to scan and eliminate the initial virus, but you generally
cannot undo the damage caused by the virus to the system
files. You'll need to reformat your hard drive and then
reinstall your Windows operating system.

After restoring your system, consider installing a good
antivirus program, such as Windows OneCare. You can
try it absolutely FREE for 90 days.

I recently got a virus on my computer and it has removed my "all
programs"
section from the start menu. I,ve tried to alter the regedit as i.ve
read
about on the site but all i get is "Regedit has been dissabled by your
administrator".
Also my "Taskmanager" has been dissabled.
Ontop of all that something keeps uploading and downloading things
from/to
my computer.
All the virus scanners/Spyware programs etc say my system is
clean.....obviously not.
past year. Got rid of them all. ( I do a lot of experimenting with
different programs. Bored you know! )Just need the right programs. E.G.
Malwarebytes Anti Malware (My favorite); Hijackthis and combo fix. There
are others. Format and reinstall should be a last resort; but it seems
that is the first solution for some on this NG.
If you do backups and disk imaging on a regular basis, it should take far
less time to restore a system than poke around trying to find an unknown
virus, (an hour or so), you can save your most recent user files, as they
likely won't be infected and you can get on with your life that way.
No AV or malware scanner is 100 % effective, so don't get lazy and rely on
them totally - just like reverse alarms ;-)
