Hello nick.
I tried to follow your instructions.
right click on xp_exe_fix.reg
I choose "open with" - "choose from list" - "browse" then I choose the same
file.
the answer I get is "xp_exe_fix.reg is not a valid win32 application".
is there another application that may open this file ?
thanks

Actually, we ran into this problem a few weeks ago. The Kelly's fix is the.
cure however you have to find a way to get it to execute as the OP stated.
To do this right-click on it and then "Open-with", choose default program,
then find that file (yes the exact file) and click open. That should work.

Hello,
Something has removed all of the settings in your registry that tell the
system which programs to use with which file extension. Since it has
also removed the file association setting for .exe files you can't run
any programs as they are .exe files and now Windows doesn't know what to
do with them.
I don't know of any way to fix this other than doing a repair
installation of Windows. Well, actually I do know one other way to fix
it. You need what's called an Offline Registry Editor and with it you
could edit your registry and manually re-enter the file associations
into your registry.
This would take a long time as there are many, many file extensions that
would have to be re-instated. You could of course just re-establish the
file association for only the .exe and .com files, then boot your
Windows system and you will then be able to do a System Restore.
Here are links to several sources of Offline Registry Editors.
http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/peboot.htm
You will of course need to know what the default association is for the
..exe and .com files first so it's off to google again...
Here are the contents of a .reg file which could fix the problem if your
file associations weren't messed up already. It shows you the keys you
need to create to get the .exe file association working again.

My computer is in a bad situation.
almost all icones on the desktop, all programs at the menu (start,
programs...) and all icones in the control panel do not function.
the message I get when I try to use them is (translated from French): "no
program is associated with this file to execute this action. create an
association using the application file option in the control panel"
I tried to do system restoration but it responses the same way.
I think that the problem started when spybot asked me if I authorize
changes
in registery and I replied no.
since than I can't open any program or utility (luckily explorer stil
works)
Does someone have an idea how can i make system resoration.
or should i try to repair windows with a windows cd.
thanks in advance for your help
Amir
