thanks but that didn't help.
This happens any time I do a restart, not just after installing a new program.
If I shut down and then switch on again the computer is fine.
It seems to me that when doing a restart, somehow the address at which the
system looks for the operating system has been corrrupted.
When booting from cold, the address in the boot.ini file is correct and the
computer boots up OK.
Now , if I could just find the instruction used in a restart, I could fix
this problem.

We are sometimes told "please reboot your computer" If I do this by closing
down and then switching on again (a cold boot) all is fine, BUT if I do this
by clicking restart (a hot boot), the computer shuts down tries to switch on
again and after being given the option to go into bios the screen goes black
and the message "error loading operating system" appears.
If I now cut the power and switch on again it boots up fine.
What is going on?
Run disk cleanup and defrag in safe mode then try the user clean up hive

Does this happen after installing updates/new software?
