Re: Norton 2009 upgrade & Zonealarm

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

Assuming you're upgrading to NAV 2009, not NIS 2009 or Norton 360 2009:

1. After making certain you have a copy of your Product Key, uninstall all NAV 2008 and LiveUpdate via Control Panel | Programs | Uninstall a program (or Control Panel | Programs and Features, if using Classic view).

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g., browsing; reading email; chatting) except #3 through #5 below until your anti-virus application has been installed and fully updated!

2a. Download this removal tool to your desktop: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

2b. Double-click on the saved download to run the tool.

4. Reboot *twice*.

5. Temporarily disable ZA *and then* enable the Windows Firewall!

6. Install NAV 2009.

7. Reboot twice.

8. Disable the Windows Firewall then re-enabled ZA.

I received a notice that I'm eligible for a free upgrade to the 2009
version of Norton antivirus. After downloading it, the install
couldn't continue until I remove ZoneAlarm. I'm not happy with
Norton - It takes does things I don't want it to do, slows down the
computer, etc. Will switch to a different antivirus when the contract
is up, but have about 6 months to go on it.

Questions - if I do remove ZoneAlarm, can I reinstall it after the
Norton upgrade and have both apps work properly? I remember a
previous issue such as this with these 2 apps.
Is it really necessary to upgrade Norton? I'm running the
2008 version.

Thanks for any advice on this.
