Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

There is no definite information on the OptionalComponents key, some relate
it to virus, trojan or spyware infection, present or deleted. Others relate
it to optional or occasional valid processes. Some subkeys under
OptionalComponents may be MAPI, MSFS, IMAIL... most of which are valid
processes. MAPI seems to be related to Messaging applications, MSFS to
Microsoft Flight Simulator and IMAIL to mail and instant messaging... so, as
far as I can tell, there is no definite answer... but it's probably safe to
delete it just in case it should be related to bugware as some people claim
by the apparent symptoms they say it causes, examples are a folder opening
at startup, sluggishness, unexplained message boxes, etc. And since it is an
optional process key, it should be safe to delete... just make a backup in
case you need to restore it which you probably wont... this key is not
present on a freshly installed system and should not cause adverse effects
to deleted. I have found it and deleted it on several occasions and have
noticed nothing. Check the links for more complete information.

The diference between Startupfolder and startupreg is depending on were
the
startup programs were loaded from, as you may know, when you install a
program, the installer adds shortcuts in the start menu, if one is a
startup
program it adds a shortcut in the Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder, and
an
entrie in msconfig... when you disable one of these entries in msconfig,
it
adds a subkey under "startupfolder".

Other startup programs add registry values in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, this
adds
an entrie in msconfig,.. and when you disable one of these programs, this
puts a subkey in "startupreg".


Disabled items in msconfig that were in the Start menu\Programs\Startup
folder:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder

Disabled items in msconfig that were loaded in the startup from the
Registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg

You can also disable programs from the Run keys in the registry... if
they
don't show in msconfig they will in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run


Download MSConfig Cleanup 1.5 if you often cleanup msconfig.
