One beep - then frozen

I take care of tech issues with my wife's computer as well as my own,
and generally do her updates, defrag, etc. on Fridays. Her computer is a Dell, nine months old, has always operated flawlessly, and is fully updated.
I booted her machine this morning, left the room and returned five minutes later to find the hourglass still up (desktop looked normal). I moved the mouse arrow over to a small text file on the desktop and experimentally double-clicked on it - it didn't open, and then I got one short "beep". Absolutely nothing would budge after that - frozen solid. I shut it down, waited two minutes and rebooted - everything right as rain. Interestingly, nothing in Event Viewer or anything else in Administrative Tools showed anything out of the ordinary. A one-time hiccup, or is something going on? Appreciate any responses!
Tony
