unable to connect on Windows XP SP2 - though able to ping???

my laptop connection to the internet is no longer working - none of my
programs are able to connect (IE, Firefox, Skype for instance), except for
ping which still works - I can ping the gateway, and get seemingly normal
response times.
When I bring up IE or Firefox after a while my Firewall (ZoneAlarm) asks
whether program called "WLLogin Proxy" should be allowed to access the
internet. I had not seen this program request access before I started having
problems with my internet connection. I did a search on wllogin on
microsoft's support site and did not get any hits. Do you know what this
program is? I checked my IE configuration to make sure someone did not
reconfigure it to go through a proxy - but found no issues there.
I have gone through the normal steps - powered down my cable modem and
router, tried wireless and wired connections - all to no avail.
Any of you have suggestions for me?
Thank you!!
