I have a number of networked XP machines. They all boot automatically all
the way to the desktop without stopping for passwords or welcome screens.

Except one.

This one I recently ran Windows Update on and, perhaps foolishly, decided
to
include the optional software updates. Perhaps this is the root of my
peoblem?

This machine is set identically to the others in Control Panel/User
Accounts/Change how users log on. Both "Use Welcome Screen" and "Enable
fast
user switching" are checked in all cases. However, this one stops at the
Welcome Screen and I seem to have a choice of clicking on my name, which
is
irritating, or entering a password, which is even more irritating.

Is there a way I can restore this machine's boot sequence to the way it
was?

Since you're responsible for several machines, you should make
a note of this method to force an automatic logon:
To log on to Windows automatically as a certain user, do this:
- Click Start / Run / control userpasswords2{OK}.
- Click the user you wish to log on as.
- Untick the box that requires users to enter a password.
- Click OK and enter the password when prompted.
