Hello:

I'm trying to salvage my hard drive. Following is the advice I got from a
user of this newsgroup:

"To see if your hard disk is still useable, remove it from the laptop and
install it in an external 2.5" USB case. You can now connect this case
to any Windows XP PC to check your files. Later on you can use the
same case plus a 2.5" hard disk as your backup device. You'll be
surprised how little it costs and how effective it is."

Do you know where to find instructions for installing the hard drive into
the case? Do they come with the case? Is this a simple procedure?
The case that I have has two screws which hold the ends in place. Remove
one end.
You will need an adapter to connect the drive to the socket in the case.
Sometimes the case comes with one.
Remove the drive from the laptop following the instructions in the fine
manual for the laptop.
Plug the adapter onto the end of the drive which contains the cable sockets.
Slip the drive into the case, and bolt the end back on.

Also, how do I connect the case to the computer with XP? And, once this
connection is made, what steps do I follow in order to salvage the data on
the hard drive? Does XP have a built-in utility?
These cases all use a USB cable. Just plug one end of the cable into an
available USB port on the computer. The drive gets its power from the USB
port.
I use Windows Explorer to copy data from one drive to another.

Thank you,

John
