Re: Win XP says it is connected to the LAN, but will not go Online

I Have JOY JOY JOY!!! But with help from an unlikly source. What it was
amazed even me! My eleven year old grand daughter asked me, "Why don't you go
into the 'Administrative Tools' and make sure every thing is set to Enabled?
Ok, what the heck, I'll let her feel like she's helping.
Would you belive it, Anything, and Everything, that had to do with the DNS,
DHCP, Browser, HTTP, IP Services, Network DDE, ect. ect. ect. was either
Disabled or set to Manual!! Now I know what your thinking, but she hasn't
been near the dang thing since I took it in my work room and did the back-up
of the files I wanted to keep and wiped the HDD clean with WD software.
So I had to ask, "How the heck did you come up with that idea?"
Two words 'Summer School'.
She had had some problems with 'Math' last year, so we Made her go. So to
make it short, when the teacher was showing them how to do math skills on the
computer using a White-Board, Windows XP went nuts and would not let the
White-Board work. So, the math class that day turned into computer 101 and
while everyone watched, gathered around the teacher, She fixed the problem,
and the last thing she did was go into the 'Administrative Tools'_'Services
(Local)' and ENABLE then START everything that had to do with the white-Board.
Needless to say I was speechless when after re-starting the system the Dang
thing works just fine!!!

GrandPa and GrandMa were so pleased we took her to her favorite place, the
Mall today and gave her $20, then followed her, at a distance, for two hours.

Thanks to Everyone for all the help, I for one learned a lot from this,
Problem.

Thanks From us All,
Michael,Debra,Rebekka,Cody, and of course 'Our Computer Nerd' Brandee :-))

If you're familiar with router setup, did you try my note from a few days
ago ... try 192.168.1.1 ( substitute your router menu setup page address)
from bad pc to router while plugged into port 1 ?
Event log - show anything ?
Can you ping this pc from others ?
vice versa ?
do you see traffic on nic counters ?
Firewall off ?
nic config - Client for Microsoft Windows ?

go down the list from network troubleshooting link in my last note
Compare between this BAD pc and one of your GOOD pc's.

Tried that this morning but did the same thing, then tried all the
others
after that and they work just fine, each and every one!!! This has gone
from
frustrating to thinking about pulling the memory and hard drive out,
then
taking it outside and killing it with a Very Large Hammer. But, I can't
do
that, somebody would call the law and I would get in trouble for
'Disturbing
the Peace'. (But I Can Dream!!!)

I have four computers on a LAN but suddenly one will not go online.

I have turned every thing off, Modem, router, all four computers, for
more
than ten minets. Then turn on the modem wait for all the lights to
turn
green, then power on the router and wait for the green lights, then
plug in
each cable one at a time and wait for the light to come on then the
next
cable until all four are installed with lights on. Then turn on each
computer, making sure that it can go online before turning on the
next one
and so on till all four are on.

I have tried changing to another port on the router with the computer
that
won't go online. No Joy
Changed the NIC card to another PCI slot. Changed the NIC card for a
known
working one. No Joy
Then swapped cables, still NO JOY!
What the Heck is it !?!
Also every time I did somthing, Windows still tells me it is
connected.

Last night I saved what files I wanted, and wiped the hard drive
clean, then
installed windows XP home edition, and It Still Does the Same
Thing!!!

Hello,
Plenty of good suggestions.
Remove the router and the other computers and use a direct connection
from
the modem to the problem computer.

take care.
