Zone Alarm is the issue. Either uninstall the latest MS update,

or lower the ZA setting so it doesn't kill the internet.
Lowering your security is a very dangerous way to react to the
problem.
The best choice is to dump ZA and use the Microsoft firewall instead.

Last night the automated update service downloaded what appeared to be the usual suspects: some security patches and the latest malicious software removal tool. After installing and re-booting, my network connectivity has gone to pot. I can still ping external URLs so I know I have a good connection, but any attempt to load a web page or download e-mail results in a time-out error. Likewise when my AVG anti-virus tries to connect to the update server. This was all working perfectly this morning, right up to the instant I re-booted after the patch installs.
I'm stymied: the system can't download any possible updates or fixes Microsoft might release for this, nor can I access any online tech support for trying to troubleshoot the problem. I'm posting this from my office system at work.
I guess one possibility would be to try to revert to the state prior to the patches--I assume the state is bookmarked automatically by the Microsoft Update feature? Does this seem reasonable? Has anyone else encountered this problem?
