I occasionally get some strange noises through my speakers. They are
not any that I could find under the "Sounds" tab on the "Sounds and
Audio Devices Properties" menu. Is there a way to trace which program
is issuing the sounds?

First thing I would try; change the "Default Beep" event to "None". Are
you still getting the sound?
