None of the suggestions seemed to resolve the problem. My wife came up with
the obvious solution - do a restore 2 b4 the problem occurred. All is well
now! This can be closed.

Kelly,
I tried 5X and holding down keys. The Use Shortcut box is unchecked. I
rebooted and the problem is still there? i.e. when I start or reboot, the
characters I type don't display. I have to hold down the SHIFT key until it
makes a sound to be able to display characters on the screen. This is weird!
