I apologize for what is basically a duplicate posting - but for some reason
my prior posting shows up on the forum but when I click on it I get it I get
'community message not available'. Perhaps my specific mention of a third
party software product is causing a problem (?) - so I am unable to see
responses that have been posted.

In any case, when trying to install a money management software product
(after a prior version was installed) I see files extracting and then get the
message 'Microsoft has encountered a problem and needs to close. No files are
created - the install does not get very far at all.

Many attempts including un-stalling the prior version, running the software
vendors clean-up utiltiy, running the Microsoft Install clean up utility
(this product does not show up in the list as one that can be cleaned up),
installing from a new account - have all failed to produce anything but the
same Microsoft message.

I know that I have to work more with the vendor - but does anyone have any
ideas as to how I can get more information to diagnose this problem?

Check the Event Viewer for any errors and a possible resolution to the
problem.
Click Start > Run, type in: eventvwr.msc and press Enter or click Ok.
Expand the event viewer window.
Click once on either Applications or System in the Left pane.
Double click on an error listed in the Right pane to bring up a details window.
Click the link if present at the end of the description to a page with a
"possible solution".

I did and learned that it is a BEX event type in setup.exe - pulled out this
txt file - but I'm afraid I didn't find any clues in there:
