Lets go for the easier root. Download the free application called TweakUI http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx (You need to look on the right hand side of the web page and select TweakUI.exe (not the titanium version)

Once you have downloaded it, install it and then run the application. In the TweakUI main window click the + (plus) sign next to the Logon option and then click 'Autologon' In the auto logon window put a tick in the box marked 'log on automatically at system startup' then click OK. Now restart your PC and you should boot straight to the desktop.

hi there, yes I typed as instructed but a small window popped up at startup
which had Administrator and then had to type password which i did then
realised it did not need to type the password and just clicked enter on
keyboard which then brought me to desktop.Any other suggestions much
appreciated...thanks very much.
