Re: Missing Driver

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

No, nothing happened prior to the problem occuring. One night it
worked, the next night it didn't. I tried a System Restore already and that
didn't work. I will try your other suggestion this week and see what
happens. I have no idea how to start my computer in safe mode so I will have
to look up those directions. Thanks for your help. I do appreciate it.

What, if anything, happened to your system just prior to the problem
occurring?

Assuming that the answer to the above is "Nothing" or "I don't recall,"
and also assuming that you haven't installed or uninstalled any software
(including updates) since the problem happened, try using System Restore
to go back to a point prior to the problem. If this fixes things, then
you're good to go. If it doesn't, you can "undo" the System Restore and
then try the following --

- Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Software and uninstall the
software you installed from the CD (one or more Nero apps; InCD).
- Disconnect the USB DVD drive.
- If you have USB devices connected to the computer other than your
mouse and/or keyboard, disconnect them.
- Reboot in Safe Mode.
- Go to Device Manager and click View > Show hidden devices
- Expand the entry for Other Devices and uninstall all instances of the
DVD drive that are there.
- Do the same for the entry for DVD/CD-ROM Drives.
- Reboot into normal mode.
- Connect the USB DVD drive, making sure that it is connected to a USB
2.0 port (if possible, a different port than the one to which you
originally connected it), and see if it is properly detected and
installed this time.
- Reinstall the software from the CD.

The Device Manager entry is under "other devices" with the yellow
question mark, and then under that is the model number of the Sony, DRX-S7OU.

The Sony DRX-S7OU is a USB Plug-n-Play unit. It doesn't come with a
driver. See http://sony.storagesupport.com/node/7183

Is the Device Manager entry with the error under "DVD/CD-ROM Drives" or
under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers"?

Excuse me if I'm at the wrong forum. I'm a beginner to these forums and
hopefully someone can help me out.
I installed a Sony DVD-RW external burner about a month ago and it
worked fine up until this weekend. When I went to use it, it said "driver
not installed." So I did the standard, unplug etc. and nothing worked. I
would put a CD in and hear it humming but nothing ever happened. I wrote to
Sony who had me check the Device Manager. It shows a yellow question mark
with a "Code 1." Then I started to get a prompt saying "new hardware found"
but when I go to click on that, it just keeps searching and searching and
again ... nothing happens. One day it worked, the next day it didn't.
Can anyone offer any suggestions as to how I can get this working
again? Thanks in advance.
Debora,

Could you please provide the exact make/model of the DVD-RW.

Was an install disk provided with the drive?
If yes, have you tried reinstalling the drivers using the disk?
If no, have you checked Sony's support site for updated/drivers for your
specific drive to download/install per their instructions?
