Ok, let's try this one step at the time. Get psexec.exe from
www.sysinternals.com, then execute the following command
from a DOS Prompt on the Win98 PC while the WinXP PC
sits at the logon screen:
psexec \\ProblemPC -u bruce -p YourPassword cmd{Enter}
Replace "bruce" and "YourPassword" with the account name/
password of an administrator's account on the WinXP PC.
You should get a Command Prompt on the WinXP PC, e.g.
X:\Windows\system32
You won't see drive letter X: - what drive letter do you actually see?

I have another computer that is networked to the problem PC. The
networked computer runs 98.
Further details?

After I optimized my drive with Norton, my computer now will logon on
to a user then immeadiately logoff. I can't get into safe mode.
Dell says I have to reinstall windows and will lose data.
Is there any fix here?
Thanks,
Bruce
This usually happens when Windows is unable to locate the
file userinit.exe, e.g. if the system drive letter changes from
C: to a different letter. The cure depends on your setup:
a) If you have another machine that is networked to the problem
PC - easy.
b) If you can connect the problem PC's disk as a slave disk
to another Windows machine - not so easy.
c) None of the above - a lot harder.
Regardless of the method, the time you'll spend fixing the
problem will far exceed any time you might gain because
of the Norton "optimizing" action. I wonder how the company
can substantiate its claim.
