Re: KB899589 failed to instal

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

YW but I was replying to Jeff, not you. It's not always safe to follow instructions/recommendations posted for another user, Gerry. It's always best to begin a new thread about your problem, even if it appears to be identical to someone else's.

This appears to be a bug in the Windows Update detection logic. KB899589
should not be needed if WinXP SP3 was installed properly.

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3. Go to Windows Update website > Select CUSTOM and allow the scan to
complete > Uncheck/deselect KB899589 and hide it ("Don't show me this
update again").

4. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)
