Cannot get get IP Adreess

Hi, have been trying to help a friend of mine resolve an Internet connection issue. He is running XP with SP2 and connects to the net via AOL using an Ethernet cable and a Belkin router. All was fine until last Wednesday when he couldn't access the net. I have had a look at the PC and notice that the system is trying to access an IP address. Have been through 2 very unhelpful phone calls with AOL Technical backup the end result being that they can see the router but what ever we try we cannot change the IP Address.Their diagnoses of the problem is that there are corrupt files preventing the connection being made however they couldn't tell me what these corrupt files might be or how to fix the issue.
Does anybody know what I might try next ?
If any more information needed please let me know and TIA

.
