Re: XP Pro Activation After Windows Update - Error Code 0x8004050a

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Now stuck with a working computer as long as :

1. Start the activation, go all the way through the process and don't hit
finish or else get Problem with Activtion Error : 0x8004050a

2. Leave the IE7 window open also or I get a memory read error for Svchost.exe

All this from doing a multiple item windows update. What a joke !!!!!!!!!!
MS more like US(less)

I don't know how to cross-post and the page you directed me to is blocked by
the proxy server at work.

Anyway - the important part is that I have managed to find a way round no
getting into my desktop.

During the activation window:

1. Press Windows Key + U (Windows Narrator will appear)
2. Clink on the link to Microsoft Website (which starts the newly installed
IE7 and gives me access to internet)
3. Type in c:\ in IE7 address bar and you can access the desktop & programs
from here.
4. Now I've only to get rid of the error code or restore

After connecting to windows update the other evening and downloading WGA &
IE7 along with other updates my computer asked me to activate windows when
it re-started.

It could not connect to the internet now for some reason so I used
telephone
activation.

I then typed in the activation code and the computer returned error code:
Problem with Windows Activation : Error Code 0x8004050a and computer logs
me
out.

Please don't give me the following advice :

1. Contact MS - As I've got a support number and they have pointed me here
or KB.

2. Try starting in safe mode - I've tried that but it still asks for
activation

3. Re-Installing XP Pro - For some reason it will not start my XP Pro disk
even with the 1st boot device set to CD-ROM. It does start up my old
laptops
XP Home Edition disk thus allowing me to go into Restore but even though I
did create a restore point prior to updating cannot get rstrui.exe to run.

4. Try posting on WGA forum - They claim the problem is nothing to do with
them. Although there are similar posts going back 10 months there.

5. Try posting in IE7 forum - same as answer 4 above.

6. Tell me to install XP Home then run the XP Pro as I've acquired mutiple
devices since buying this laptop 5 years ago and don't want to re-load all
the drivers.

7. My copy of windows XP Pro is genuine. I do have a COE.

8. The computer had been running quite happily for the last 5 years before
this set of updates.
