Are you running IE6 or IE7 currently?
IE Tools | Internet Options | Advanced | Browsing | Automatically check for
IE updates (uncheck).
PS: You'll have to completely disable Spybot Tea Timer (if enabled) to be able to do this and have it stay that way. See http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=32409
