I suspect Automatic Updates on the desktop is configured for 'Notify Only' or 'Download but Notify' but the laptop's configured for 'Automatic' (which happens by default when you install OneCare). If so, the laptop should be offered SP3 sometime in mid- to late-June, Mike.

My desktop downloaded the SP3 update more than a week ago, but the
laptop has give no indication that it has received the update yet.
I guess I can manually go the the Microsoft Update site and see if it
is available for the Laptop, but I was just wondering if there is a
staged rollout and if the Laptop might be on a later stage (perhaps
OEM versions update later than off-the-shelf) copies of XP?
