Re: Using the Microsoft tech support

Hi janet,
I'm glad your issue sorted out one way or another. But it will be best if
you run through the cleaning steps to make sure the machine is clean?.
Thanks for your feedback.
Good luck

Dear nass.
Your knowledge in this matter is simply breathtaking. Wonderful indeed !
I tried to follow your very long advice , went about half way, then
remembered how Microsoft own advisers taking over may machine from India
screwed it so badly when they went so extensively into the registry,
deleting and reorganizing.
So I stopped and didn't go all the way.
I was about to pack the machine and take it back to the shop when Lady Luck
came visiting.
All of a sudden an update icon appeared all by itself near the clock, and
after completing its download, it started installing. After installation
ended and computer re-booted I went to the update site and it was opened for
me as always before.
Explanation to this I don't have, nor do I care to explain it. Let's say the
God of the computers or lady luck did it. I am happy and out of troubles.
Many thanks to all who helped in this mess, The MVPs here and in MS own tech
support center.

Janet.

Dear nass

I did read your message and I did go to the site.
They mention many files of the 0x80072EE class and they suggest I
download
self extractor cabinet file # (836941.exe) which I did.

But activating this file freezes my machine that even the "window task
manager" that lists active programs and can stop any program causing
troubles, even window task manager freezes completely.
Going to "Start\Turn off" to shut the machine will not work as the whole
machine is frozen and only pulling the plug helps.
Then on start again window restore the machine to life. I have this
836941.exe in front of me but it is not usable.

I thank you for your time nass, and hope you can help further in this
problem

Janet

Dear MowGreen (MVP)

Method #1 you suggested did the trick and allowed the updates to flow.

I thought that my XP with SP2 is the latest but to my surprise it
started
installing SP3. An operation that took about three hours to complete
despite
my very fast cable connection. It also restored many icons from
generic
to
their original luster and installed IE 7. This is excellent. It also
told
me
to return to the MS site after installation to install another six
updates
needed. After the installation I returned to the MS update site but
that
now was locked and gave me a notice of ERROR # 0x80072EE2. I wonder
what
that is?

As for exposing my E-mail address then it is a mistake I made long
long
ago
and by now I get E-mails from Tibet to Honolulu... 10% usable and 90%
junk
that is filtered at the server page and never reach my machine. Thanks
for
the reminder anyway.
Please decipher this Error # 0x80072EE2 for me and
Thank you very much.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from
Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

Do Method 1 and then see if the updates will install now.
If no joy, use Method 2.

I run window XP Pro for the last 3.1/2 years from a legal copy.
During
all this time Windows will check me out each time and then load all
the
new updates. 10 days ago my IE browser that I keep on "BLANK" was
invaded by Microsoft that offered IE 7 and I couldn't get rid of
it.
Finally I surrendered and installed IE 7 but still couldn't go back
to
my
"BLANK" page. I was told by friends it is a virus by Microsoft.
For
the
first time in my life I called MS and they helped me turn my home
page
back to Blank. It was not in the "Internet option home page
settings"
that I know, but elsewhere and very complicated. After thanking
them
and
recycling the machine, appeared from the dead an old program I
erased
long ago with ADD/REMOVE and now came back to life. I called MS
again
and
they were on the phone with me, and took command of my machine,
for
over three hours. Under my watching eyes they played with the
registry
so
deep and wide that the machine finally went dark and will not
start.
They
finally admitted inability to fix it.
The next day I took it to a shop where they started it without me
losing
any data on my hard drive but now the MS updates will not load. The
icon
of the updates sits near the clock and constantly flicker. I click
it,
it
tries to install, then declare it can't do it. This story is now
going
on
for 10 days and I am sick of clicking it back and forth for
nothing. I
wrote that department in MS who helped me but no help came from
them.
Can any MVP help me from here?
