Spybot and SpywareBlaster = crp!
Kaspersky is way better.

I then noticed that SpywareBlaster had already had some protection
removed. I can only assume that this was what was going on in IE.

Doubtful: SpywareBlaster doesn't include real-time protection. Its
default protections (assuming they're all enabled) do include a long list
of domains placed in Restricted Sites zone, however. The changes
installing SP3 makes to the Registry may have come into play here.

So as you've observed, it would probably be best to disable all
SpywareBlaster protections before installing SP3. After installing (and
rebooting twice), check for updates before re-enabling all SpywareBlaster
protections. (A SpywareBlaster update was released 01 May-08.)

To fully disable Spybot Tea Timer (if enabled), see

Cracked it. Seems I had two problems.

Looked in Event Viewer, nothing under Applications but in System there
was a log telling me that there was not enough space in System Restore
and that the service had been suspended. Duly turned off SR to clear all
restore points, rebooted, turned it back on and created a "Pre SP3"
restore point.

Thought that was it but download hung again.

Looked in Task Manager and IE was going crazy, although only the
download window was open.

Suddenly the window disappeared. Set about disabling AV, immunisation in
Spybot S&D and SpywareBlaster prior to install.

I then noticed that SpywareBlaster had already had some protection

Didn't give it a thought that SpywareBlaster would affect the download,
only the install.

Anyway. now have SP3. Installation went smoothly.

So, anybody having similar problems, check SR and disable protection in
Spybot and SpywareBlaster prior to download, not installation.
