I posted this to the hardware group but didn't get any response and
thought that someone on here might be able to help. I have a Dell
Dimension 8200 with XP, SP2 and a Microsoft ergonomic 4000 v1.0
keyboard. The problem is this; normally when I push the backspace key
or back arrow button or use the mouse to click backspace it works but
on some sites it just cycles and does nothing and I have to do it 2-3
times before it backspaces. I have tried going into Safe Mode with
Networking and also tried using the online keyboard and it does the
same thing. I even reinstalled my keyboard drivers thinking it somehow
got corrupted but it still does it. It's not a stuck key, otherwise
why would I be able to backspace on most sites but not all? As an
example, this site requires me to backspace at least 3 times:
It didn’t use to be like this and I’m wondering why it does it now? In
passing, I have turned off the Microsoft automatics updates on the
advise of others and I’m just wondering if this may have affected it?
I would appreciate any help.
Thanks for the link but it doesn't describe or help solve the problem
as I am never prompted by the Security Center although it is correct
in that I do not see any ad-servers in the drop down list of the back
button so mine is 'supposedly' working properly yet as I've said on
some sites it doesn't. I should have included that I am using IE7,
sorry. This is what the link you provided says on the subject:
Sometimes when you click the Back button in IE6 to return to the
previous page it appears that nothing happens. What usually occurs is
that the HOSTS file has blocked one or more (<IFrame>) ad pages that
are embedded into the web page you are viewing. To verify this click
the small drop-down arrow on the Back button, do you see just an ad
server listed? ... well now you know ..... As you can see the first
three links are blocked ad servers, simply skip to the valid link.
However there are a few exceptions. In some cases the web page can
contain a script to prevent the user from returning to a previous
Martin Hawes sends along this tip: (IE6)
If you add the "ad servers" you see listed in the Back Button drop-
down, to the Restricted Zone this will eliminate the Back button
issue. Editors Note: however if you are using Windows XP SP2, you will
be prompted by the "Security Center" about a 3rd party connection.
Just click No and continue.
Vista/IE7 users should not see any ad servers listed in the drop-down
list of the Back Button if your HOSTS file is working properly.
Workaround: Instead of using the Back button, navigate to previous pages
via the dropdown menu available by clicking on the downward-pointing arrow
to the right of the Back/Forward buttons in IE7.
Thanks, it does work, but I'm still curious why the back space button,
keys, and/ot clicking do not function on some sites and do on others?
The sites where it does work don't have ads being blocked by your custom HOSTS file.
