Gerry,
Thanks again for the info. Here's the 16 unsigned files. Hope you can
deduce something from the list. Also, prior to installing SP3, I established
a restore point. But, for some reason when I try to restore to that or other
points, it won't do it. That's another issue, however.

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK.You then
get options to Start, Close and Advanced. Select Advanced, Logging and
make sure the option to Save the file signature verification results to
a log file is checked. If it was already checked you can click on View
Log to open SIGVERIF.TXT and this can be copied into your message.

Gerry, Thanks for the prompt and comprehensive reply to my post. To
answer your questions:
The stop screen occurred when SP3 installed and wanted to restart the
PC. When I restarted, I got the stop screen. I tried restarting
again, and got the same results. I booted in safe mode, and tried
restarting the 3rd time, but no soap.
There are no question marks or exclamation points in device manager.
All seems normal.
Runing sigverif.exe resulted in 16 unsigned files. I can't paste a
screen shot to show you what they were, but most are dll files. If
there's a way to send you the list (I have the screen shot pasted to
a Word doc), let me know.
I will do the memory test and chkdisc test and let you know how I
make out, however, I haven't had any problems with my PC running SP2
for some time, but I'll do the tests anyhow.
Thanks again for your help!

I received the following Stop screen error code after installing SP
3 to my XP Home Edition OS.
Stop:0X0000007E (0XC0000005, 0XF781C756, 0XF79F7430, 0XF79F712C)
I had to reboot in safe mode and uninstall SP3 to get back to
normal, which is Service Pack 2. The PC is an HP Compaq SR1520NX
with 1GB Ram and 160GB HD with plenty of room. The only hardware I
had a bit of trouble with was an Nvidia AGP card which they helped
me with updating the driver several months ago. I don't seem to
have any problems otherwise with it. Also, I installed a Pinacle
USB TV Tuner. I've had some problems getting it to recognize the
tuner occasionally. Sometimes when I unplug it and re-plug it, it
works.
How can I tell (from the error code) what is causing the stop
screen? I appreciate any input...thanks!
Don
