Any other ideas?

Maybe :) Try this:
- Click on Start and then on Run.
- In the open box type regedit and then click OK.
- Click on the plus (+) next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
- Click on the plus (+) next to Software.
- Click on the plus (+) next to Microsoft.
- Click on the plus (+) next to Windows.
- Click on the plus (+) next to CurrentVersion.
- Click on the plus (+) next to Explorer.
- Click on the folder that says Advanced.
- Click on Edit, select New, and choose DWORD Value.
- Name the new DWORD Value EnableBalloonTips.
- Double-click this new entry, set the value to 0.
- Fill in the dot next to Hexadecimal.
- Close the Registry Editor and reboot the computer normally.
- You (should) have now disabled the balloon tips in the system tray.

Good luck :)
