Every time I close the Control Panel a Runtime Error occurs. It does not
occur on opening - only on closing the Control Panel. It does not hamper
working within the Control Panel for only occurs on closing.

I am running a Sony PCV-RZ54G, Pentium 4 CPU 3.20 GHz, 1.00 GB RAM, 150
GB HD with OS Windows XP Media Center Edition, Version 2002, SP2.

It doesn't matter how/where I access the Control Panel and same error
message appears:

1. Start Button > Settings > Control Panel
2. Desktop icon "My Computer" > Control Panel
3. In Windows Explorer > My Computer > Control Panel > Close Explorer it
crashes even if I go to another folder or drive it crashes with the same
error message

The complete error message:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
X Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Windows\Explorer.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual
way. Please contact the application's support team for more information
OK button

On clicking the OK button or the X in the top right-hand corner of the
Error window it crashes.

This has been happening now for several months but as I hardly use the
Control Panel, I had forgotten about it until today.

What can I do about it? Does the Control Panel need to be reinstalled
like the file is corrupted?

TIA

Any software/hardware installed recently?.
This can be caused by a corrupt software installed or Add-Ons corrupted or
damaged on your browser.

Go through these Cleaning steps:
1... Click start >> Control Panel >> Double Click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options, on the IE Properties window
you will see these Options:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs
| Advanced .

Click on General Tab (1st Tab on the left) and you will see a Button called
[ Clear History ..] click on it to clear your History caches, then click on
[Delete Files..] to delete Internet Files created over the time, click on [
Delete Cookies...] to delete your cookies left by visiting websites.

Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
= Then try to Disable the Add-Ons on your Browser somehow installed on your
browser, On how to disable the Add-ons follow this:
Click on Programs Tab and then click the Manage Add-Ons Button there Disable
the Non/Not Verified Plug-ins/Add-ons ( you need to Renable them one-by-one
later and see which is the culprit .
How to manage Add-Ons:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883256

Scan for malware from here:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-gb/default.htm?s_cid=sah
http://onecare.live.com/standard/en-gb/default.htm

Scan for viruses with an up2date Anti-virus software (full scan).

Run disk clean up and then run this command:
sfc /scannow

Reboot your machine, open the Control panel, does the error reoccurs?.

Have a look in the Event Viewer for error messages(X) that can shed some
light and post it back in your next post by performing the following
Open a Notepad, customize or minimize to the taskbar as you will need it
later for this step to copy the error message on it.
Open a run command and type in:
eventvwr.msc click [OK] you will get the Event viewer control Panel.
click on each of these:
Application
System
Security
Look in the right Pane/window for error message with red (X) or Yellow
exclamation mark /!\ , double click each one to get more info about the
causer.
On the Event error properties message you will see:
Up Arrow
Down arrow
Two pages
Click on the two pages to copy the error message then bring up the Notepad
you opened earlier and right click on the first line and select Paste from
the list, this will paste the error message on a Notepad.
Please don't duplicate the error message one of each kind will be sufficient.

It worked, it worked!!!!! Thank you, thank you!!! I started down your
list and after doing:

> [ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.

I rebooted and went on into the Control Panel. On exiting, it didn't
crash with the Runtime Error!!!! I didn't have to go on doing any more
of your suggestions - though keeping your list. I think it was the
disabling the 3rd party browser extensions that might have been the
answer for I periodically clear History, delete Internet Files, and
delete Cookies in IE. IE isn't my browser of choice. I use Mozilla 98%
of the time. I really only use IE when having trouble with Mozilla or
comparing display of webpages between the 2 browsers on my websites.

My next step would have been:
>click the Manage Add-Ons Button there Disable
> the Non/Not Verified Plug-ins/Add-ons

>Scan for malware
I do this periodically.

>Scan for viruses with an up2date Anti-virus software (full scan).
Do a full scan with daily updated anti-virus definition every week.

> Run disk clean up and then run this command:
> sfc /scannow
I run disk clean up monthly but haven't ever run the "sfc /scannow" command.

>Have a look in the Event Viewer for error messages(X)
Didn't know about the Event Viewer. Glad to know about it.

Again thank you for the help and the quick reply :)

Hi Susan,
Glad to help and you are welcome, just to be sure please perform the rest of
the steps for scanning and also check any Third-party browser/toolbar may
corrupted or outdated and uninstall then get the latest Version or updates
for it.
Good luck.
