Try microsoft or WMP help/support "search",99% sure there are 1 or 2
hotfixes for that.

This is a strange one. I have XP SP2, I've been using my DVD burner _NEC.
DVD_RW ND-3540A for some time without any problems.
I can currently play any shop-bought DVD
I can currently burn a new DVD which plays on a DVD player or on other
people's computers
However, right now, I cannot play any DVD-R or DVD+R (with some
exceptions), including ones that I myself burned some time ago.
The DVDs work on other PCs, there's nothing wrong with them.
When I put the pre-burned DVDR into the drive, if I try and eg copy it it
says NO DISC. If I try and browse to it from Windows Explorer, the drive
has become a CD drive and you cannot browse the DVDR's contents.
Troubleshooter, and properties from within the Control Panel, say the drive
is working perfectly (yeah right).
According to Nero InfoTool I'm using firmware version 1.01, could this be
the problem? I've tried to find a later version of the firmware for this
DVD but even if I find it, I cannot see what difference it would make.
Any advise would be deeply appreciated, as I have some home movies I made
that I want to copy for someone and they are only on DVDR
