Re: Can't see any banner ads.

I know this will seem like an odd situation but...

A few weeks ago I came across some information, most likely on the web
somewhere, that explained how to make a change to my computer that would
help block unwanted advertising through my web browser (iexplorer).
Sounded like a great idea so I did it and now I don't get to see any
banner ads in my browser. Problem is, there is a particular site that I
visit quite often that is plastered with "sponsor" banner ads. Ads that I
find quite helpful, but are now gone! I can not for the life of me
remember what that little trick is that I did. I'm not sure if it was in
iexplorer, the shell program I use to access the web (Avant Browser) or a
setting in windows somewhere. I thought perhaps it was an entry in my
hosts file but the only entry in there is "127.0.0.1 localhost". I
tried to delete this file and reopen explorer but the ads were still gone.
I reset iexplorers security settings back to medium (from custom) to no
avail. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I might try next?

Try to remember how you discovered this trick, then google for it. Chances
are you will find it again so you can undo it.

I always keep the instructions on the computer so I can either do them again
or undo them later. That way I build up a database of tweaks I can refer to
later on.

I might suggest you try using Firefox. You can block images using the right
click menu, then unblock them the same way.

There are also plugins that allow flash media to be blocked and not play
until you click on an icon on the screen, and since many ads are flash, it
very soothing ;-) You can do this in IE, but it's less convienient.
