Can't see any banner ads.

I know this will seem like an odd situation but...
A few weeks ago I came across some information, most likely on the web
somewhere, that explained how to make a change to my computer that would
help block unwanted advertising through my web browser (iexplorer). Sounded
like a great idea so I did it and now I don't get to see any banner ads in
my browser. Problem is, there is a particular site that I visit quite often
that is plastered with "sponsor" banner ads. Ads that I find quite helpful,
but are now gone! I can not for the life of me remember what that little
trick is that I did. I'm not sure if it was in iexplorer, the shell program
I use to access the web (Avant Browser) or a setting in windows somewhere. I
thought perhaps it was an entry in my hosts file but the only entry in there
is "127.0.0.1 localhost". I tried to delete this file and reopen
explorer but the ads were still gone. I reset iexplorers security settings
back to medium (from custom) to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions
on where I might try next?
