Re: scf /scannow & INFO in Event Viewer

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Neither of those pages offer anything. The Dell page when I enter my
servicer code comes back with no option for ehome. If I enter my system it
again returns no files are offered.

The other page when you click on any of the links take you to MDUpdate
screen and it does not appear when update is run.

The only option I have is the hotfix that is listed on the Roll-up 2 at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912024/

As far as a backup. I think I agreed with you on that. Why backup
something that is broken? But I do have files to move.

here is something more

again, i am not clear as to
what may have prompted you
to do a sfc. however, the
results involved not having
system files/drivers for ehome.

just a quick look at dells site,
it seems ehome is linked to
video and graphics and it is
an integral addition and perhaps
exclusive to the media edition
system you have. if it were
just a regular windows xp,
then you would not need
ehome.

i can only suggest is to review
the above information at the
links. the dell site has a lot
of specialized info exclusive
to your system and you should
take advantage of the opportunity
to understand what ehome is
and get your o.s. "perfect".

if the o.s. is not perfect, then
it will function like a lop sided
wheel, creating incoherent errors
without end. you fix one error
only to have another pop up.

then when the o.s. is perfect,
you can then consider backing
it up. we have a variety of methods
to suggest and you would find
them interesting and helpful.

"BUT", there is little point in
backing up an "imperfect" o.s.
having unknown errors and flaws.

let me know what you discover
about your ehome. double check
your manuals and by all means
get the ehome folder reestablished
so that when you run the sfc again,
it will give you a "clean bill of health"
and you will be ready to proceed
with other projects.

If this is the link for ehome that you talk of--I am not going to do it.
http://www.ehomecreations.com/downloads.htm I don't use any of the ehome
features. It talks of Media Player 9 or 10. I have WMP11. This is way too
messy and I am way too ignorant. I will move my data to an external drive
and mess around for a while so if and when I crash or if I continue to have
errors, I will have dell do a restore to factory which is what they want to
do at this point. Where do I find my personal profile (configuration) so
that I could copy it? I know how to do the backup for Outlook on personal
folders so I will just direct the file to my external drive. Copy local
settings (my user) my favorites, start up folder, and my documents. I think
that ought to do it for me for now. THEN

I am looking for a good backup program and will be buying an additional
external HD for that purpose. Acronis has been suggested. I see they have a
version 11 and presume that is the newest. Obviously, at this point I am not
interested in an image of my HD but only files. Do you have a preference or
suggestion? I presume that Acronis is loaded onto the external, correct? and
is the external formatted NTFS as is my computer HD? See now I have to go
check reviews on external HD's and all that stuff. I do usually do that. I
try to be careful with what I buy--not sure it appears that way.

I still would like your suggestion. Thanks so much for your help.

ok,

well i think that we would
be on the right track with
resizing the pagefile.

if one were to apply the
vm formula against your
4 gig ram, then you would
need to set the limit of the
pagefile to 6 gigs which would
not be prudent.

however, let the above be
secondary because it is fine tuning
the system.

the priority seems to be the ehome.
------------

in regards to ehome, it is obvious
that the folder is missing and required
according to your sfc scan.

personally i don't like the name
ehome as it eludes to a webpage
or something that is expendable.

if the folder was simply deleted
what you could try is a third party
program called recuva. with it
the deleted folder, if it is still on your
disk can be restored.

another option is to roll back your
entire system via a system restore point
that folder will likely be restored as
well since it was a system folder.

but it is unclear how far back it was
deleted and if your restore points go
that far as well. however if the issue you
have is recent, then by all means i
would attempt a system restore.

another thought is that maybe the
dell home site will have downloads and
installation packages for your computer.

there is also a dell forum and perhaps
the techs and other users have a way to
reinstall ehome without using the factory
restore. maybe someone can zip their folder
and email it to you.

i did a search and this is what
i found:

http://search.live.com/results.aspx?srch=105&FORM=IE7RE&q=download+ehome

----------

in regards to the 4 gigs of
ram, have you looked into
a switch provided by microsoft?

perhaps you have it already
or may not even need it:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa366718.aspx

the above is still another
tweak so it should be saved
for later, that is if you even need
it.

--------------

finally, it is a good idea to
copy your personal files and
don't forget about your email
boxes too. there is a freeware
called siw (system information)
that can provide you with a printout
of your email accounts and passwords.

Taking these issues only:

I have 4GB ram not 2GB

I have searched for each of the ehome missing files (hidden files shown) no
dice not there.

I reread the Update for Rollup2 and it looks like this is a hotfix not a
complete download. I am pretty sure I downloaded the Rollup2 some time ago
from MSupdate. I don't think any program has been deleted.

Ehome folders:

Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft
Same for each user
Documents and Settings\Karen\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft
C:\Windows
And this interesting entry:
IIS_qss_wss_changehome located in C:\i386\IIS6CAB

I have little data on this computer but will definitely move it before I do
anything. This is a 720XPS Dell and I have had way too many issues to
start
loading it up.

Programs I generally use are Omnipage 16 (supposedly programmed for
multi-threads), DragonSpeaking (latest version), Office 2007--Outlook,
Word,
Access, Excel, IE7. It is a working computer--not a play computer. It is
up
to date including .net framework 3 which I think it was DragonSpeaking that
required it. I spend a lot of time at live streams on the web and on a
couple of forums.

Thanks a bunch and I know it might come to a time I want to go backward.
BUT NOT YET. I use AVG full package paid for internet security, virus,
spam,
etc. And I use Diskeeper. There you have it.

Once again thanks a bunch.

ok, well at least
we know a 'tech'
was involved and
some issues have
resolved. and i
don't have a problem
with providing some
additional fyi towards
the issue at hand.

however, it will take a while
for me to review the
additional information
you just provided. but the
best course of action is to
resolve what seems to be
"known" issues.

----------------------

briefly the number 2 is equal to
2 megabytes and is the low
end of the range.

the 1152 i provided is just an
estimate for the high end of the
range.

the initial size of 2 is the floor
or base, if you will. however the
high end can fluctuate but never
be more than 1.5 times the physical
ram. it can be more than 1.5 but
regular windows will never ever
exceed this limit. however, the
limit can be lowered down to
a respectable size.

although i do not know firsthand
your configuration, it would
not be unfair to say that if
it is a regular computer with
regular software then the you
might regularly need 70 to 300
megs of virtual memory, even
though you have 2 gigs of
physical ram.

therefore if yours is
set to a range of 2000-4000,
instead of 70-300 you can
see that your pagefile is
overstated. so my suggestion
is to set your range 2-1152.

still, 1152 could be considered
too high. but it is not high enough
to be detrimental to performance.

---------------

in regards to ehome,
the add/remove listing
is not always accurate
because folders can simply
be deleted instead of using
.
