I've read from an old post that once I activate XP to a system it's
locked in to that system's specs?
If it is an OEM copy that uses SLP technology it won't even install on
another machine. In such a case activation is not even an issue.
If the XP came preinstalled (OEM) on the old desktop then you may not move
it to another machine because of licensing.
If it is a retail copy of XP then you may tranfer the license to another
computer.

Hello everyone. I've read old posts regarding XP activation/re-activation
but on the same machine (ie, after reformatting, re-install).
My question is I'm planning on getting rid of my desktop (completely
wiping the HDD of the OS which is WinXP Home SP2). I'm buying a second
hand laptop with *no* OS installed. I would like to put my XP Home SP2 on
the laptop (after wiping it off my old desktop). I've read from an old
post that once I activate XP to a system it's locked in to that system's
specs? I don't want to shell out another $150 for a copy of XP as I find
it unnecessary. Your feedback would be appreciated!
Yep, it's off-the-shelf, retail copy of WinXP Home SP2
Worst thing happens is you call consumer support
.
